Glass Painting with Cappy Thompson
Date: 30, 31 Oct & 1 Nov (Wednesday – Friday)
Location: National Sculpture Factory, Cork [VIEW MAP]
Limited places are available on this workshop. (Max. 12)
The purpose of this workshop is to acquaint students with the range of contemporary glass painting, to inspire them to paint on glass and to show them a versatile method of application. Thompson will teach the technique of grisaille or grey-tonal painting, which involves several applications and firings of vitreous enamels. First the tracery establishes the line work. Then the matt—or wash of black paint—is applied and worked subtractively with specially shaped bristle brushes. This creates tonal modeling or patterning. Finally transparent or opaque colors are applied for a third and final firing. Students will focus on reverse painting a vessel form. Included in the workshop will be slide lectures featuring contemporary glass painting from the Studio Glass Movement and an in-depth look at Thompson’s painted glass. Students will receive handouts on the tools and materials of glass painting and firing schedules for both flat glass and vessel forms.
