SUMMARY:Kiln Fired Glass Painting Workshop with Alison MacCormaic at Mulranny Arts
DESCRIPTION:In this 3 Day Workshop\, students will create contemporary grisaille glass panels\, a technique that was first developed during the 13th century. Grisaille stained glass is characterised by its use of black on clear glass with limited color\, allowing more light to pass through while showcasing fine drawn lines and intricate detail. Students will make drawings of flowers and plants found in the garden at Mulranny Arts or\, if they prefer\, use photographs and images as references. These drawings will then be transformed into glass-painted pieces using traditional vitreous glass paint\, resulting in contemporary depictions of flowers. The completed pieces will be framed and can be hung in a window to be admired against the light. \n  \nThis workshop is for 3 full days. Drawing experience is not required. Lunch is provided. Accommodation available on campus at affordable rates. Please email us directly info@mulrannyarts.com for information and to book.

SUMMARY:Classical Mosaics Workshop with Helen Miles at Mulranny Arts
DESCRIPTION:A wonderful opportunity to learn from Master Mosaic Artist Helen Miles and a chance to take a deep dive into the ancient rules of mosaic making and find out how they apply to both classical style mosaics and contemporary work. Andamento is the visual flow or direction within a mosaic\, produced by the placement of rows of tesserae. It’s an often-forgotten part of the art of mosaic but andamento\, along with the use of the Roman rules\, is a crucial tool to help you learn how to make harmonious mosaics. \nBy the end of the course\, you will leave with a full understanding of how to harness the ancient rules to make striking mosaic designs. You will also know how to use two key methods for your future mosaic work\, with an emphasis on creating mosaics which are suitable for all weather conditions. \nThis course is suitable for all levels\, but participants are advised to learn basic cutting techniques before attending.

We might even make some poems. \nMary Madec was born and raised in Co. Mayo\, near Westport. She has a Master’s in Old English from NUI\, Galway\, and a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania. She works for Villanova University in Ireland\, and lives in the ancient sea-port village of Kinvara. \nIn 2008\, she won the Hennessy XO Prize for Emerging Poetry and subsequently published three collections with Salmon Poetry: In Other Words (2010) Demeter Does Not Remember (2014) and The Egret Lands With News From Other Parts (2019). All places are first come first served basis. If booking please make sure to come as places are limited. \nParticipating glass artists will explore the properties of glass\, cut and score glass together and work on a communal piece involving the written word. In this workshop we will start with a word transformation exercise to get in touch with the power words can have on our lives. We will be using Dremel etching tools and manual ones to have fun scratching the surface of a small glass panel to create an image and experiment with silver and gold mica in the etched marks. We will also play with fonts and power words or poems to print them onto waterslide decal and use them on another glass panel. The decals will be fired onto the glass in my studio. All the pieces will have holes drilled at the top so they can be strung up. I hope we can create a communal piece of work that has meaning for us as a collective. Please bring a sketchbook and drawing pencils! \nKathryna was born in Malta in 1962\, moved to England in 1976 and has been resident in Ireland since 1993. Her current studio is situated in Glendree\, Co.Clare. Her work has been purchased and commissioned for several collections throughout England\, Ireland and Malta including: \n“Glass: A hard and brittle substance\, typically transparent or translucent.  It is made by fusing sand with soda and lime and cooling rapidly. I use the flexible potential and properties of hot glass to explore the emotions that carry our inner world of visions\, images and fairy tales. Fairy tales have become a core part of the individual and collective mind. I am interested in the deep influence they have on cultural development and how they affect the context of our lives. These stories whether traditional\, modern or spun from parents’ creativity become our personal myths and run beneath our living perceptions and expectations. I am moved and intrigued by the way the inner world of the stories we hold influences the outer life and endeavour to weave these worlds together. I cast parts or all of the human body as the vehicle to make this magical interrelation of existence visible and tactile. It is an alchemist process of bringing what is ordinarily hidden out into the light\, working with the individual’s underlying soul story which impacts their lives transmuting it into the mould. Glass is a fabulous medium for this work and expresses this dream world as a visual life-scape running through the final Artwork in Glass.” \nParticipating glass artists will be asked to bring a piece of work with them for the duration of the event; these will be displayed in the space along with works in progress from the workshop. This will result in a studio style pop up show at the end of the afternoon. From 4.30-6pm we will open to members of the public to enjoy food and an open mic session. Creating an immersive experience for visitors\, combining visual arts through glass and written word. \n  \n#AugustCraftMonth2024 #IrishGlass #ArtWorkshops #CreativeCollaboration\n#makeseebuy

SUMMARY:Sea Glass From The Flame
DESCRIPTION:Sea Glass from the Flame  a three-day workshop\, taking inspiration from the north Antrim shoreline to create sculptural objects in the flame with Borosilicate glass.  \nYou will learn how to use heat and gravity to manipulate glass in the flame. We will cover methods and techniques to bend\, stretch\, sculpt and carve molten glass to create sculptural objects\, inspired by natural forms found locally on the magical shoreline of Whitepark bay. \nUsing both bench and hand torches\, you will discover how I build intricate elements at the torch and combine solid and hollow sculpting techniques to create the larger sculptural pieces I make.  I will also demonstrate how I incorporate glass elements with mixed media to make a variety of sculptural assemblages\, installations\, and objects. \nThe class will offer demonstrations alongside practice at individual workstations. There will be group discussions and  field trips for inspiration. Together we’ll discover how to harness the magic of the sea to create detailed and intricate work with glass in the flame. \nNo previous glassmaking experience is necessary. All materials\, tools and safety equipment will  be provided. \n\nContact : andreaspencerglass@gmail.com\nWebsite: https://www.andreaspencerglass.com/classes/2024/7/26/sea-glass-and-the-flame\nCost : £450\nDates : July 26th -28th 9 – 5pm\nVenue: Benefield Spencer Glass  35 Lagavara Road Ballintoy Co.Antrim BT54 6NG

SUMMARY:Stained Glass Nearby Lecture Series: Murphy-Devitt Studios presented by Reiltín Murphy
DESCRIPTION:An overview of Murphy-Devitt Studios\, Dublin\, whose work spanned 1955-2004 in site specific abstract and figurative glass presented by Reiltín Murphy. \n  \nAs Murphy-Devitt Studios\, Dublin\, this small group of artists and craftsmen produced stained glass from 1958 to 1978. Working together more loosely outside of these dates their work spans from 1955 to 2004. The Gazetteer of Irish Stained Glass lists their work under the artists’ names: Johnny Murphy\, Róisín Dowd Murphy and others but in fact the Studio preferred to produce their work as a team and rarely put individual names outside of the Murphy-Devitt Studios date of 1958-1978. \nJohnny Murphy and Dessie (John A) Devitt met at the Harry Clarke Studios in the early 1950s. Johnny was an artist employed by Clarkes as a glass painter and Dessie was a master craftsman. They set up their own studio just in time to catch the church building boom of the 1960s. Murphy-Devitt Studios produced work for most counties in Ireland\, for England\, and abroad. \nJohnny was an innovative designer who produced both figurative and abstract work and who got the very best from the other artists who were employed at the Studio from time to time: as a lecturer in Glass at the National College of Art and Design he chose the most talented students to work in the Studio under his leadership. Please see www.murphydevittstudios.com. \n  \nAbout the Presenter: \nReiltín Murphy is a contributor to the Gazetteer of Irish Stained Glass having researched the work of Murphy-Devitt Studios with Anthony Devitt: Johnny Murphy and Dessie Devitt were their fathers. Having grown up in the Studio\, Reiltín assisted with many of the windows and designed several in association with Johnny Murphy. Please see www.reiltinmurphy.ie for more about Reiltín. \n  \nFree for GSOI Members\, 11.53 for non-members.
