SUMMARY:120 years of Irish Stained Glass - Glass Society of Ireland Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:120 Years of Irish Stained Glass highlights Irish Stained Glass from the foundation of An Túr Gloine in 1903 to the present day. \nPresented by David Caron for the Glass Society of Ireland 2nd Tuesday’s Lecture Series 2022 \nTo coincide with the publication of the revised and expanded edition of the Gazetteer of Irish Stained Glass which he edited\, David Caron’s talk will focus on highlights of Irish Stained Glass from the foundation of An Túr Gloine in 1903 to the present day. David has focused on ten artists and chosen a selection of their key works. The artists are A.E. Child\, Michael Healy\, Harry Clarke\, Wilhelmina Geddes\, Richard King\, Evie Hone\, Patrick Pye\, Johnny Murphy and Róisín Dowd Murphy (both of Murphy-Devitt Studios)\, George W. Walsh and Peter Young. The talk will introduce each artist in chronological order and provide context for their work and the general development of Irish stained glass during the period. The majority of the images for the talk were taken by Jozef Vrtiel\, specialist stained glass photographer\, who was the principal photographer for the Gazetteer of Irish Stained Glass (published by the Irish Academic Press\, 2021). \nDavid Caron was born in Dublin and studied Visual Communication at the National College of Art and Design\, Dublin\, to which he returned in due course as lecturer and was subsequently appointed as Head of Department. He was one of the three original compilers of the first edition of the Gazetteer of Irish Stained Glass in 1988\, along with the late Dr Nicola Gordon Bowe and the late Dr. Michael Wynne. David’s PhD research at Trinity College Dublin focused on the stained glass artist Michael Healy and the artists of An Túr Gloine (Tower of Glass) studio. He has written articles on various aspects of Irish stained glass over the years\, most often for the Irish Arts Review. He is currently preparing a book on Michael Healy while maintaining a ‘Supplementary List of Windows’\, with the assistance of the contributors to the Gazetteer and others\, for any future edition of the Gazetteer of Irish Stained Glass. \nFree for GSOI members\, €11.09 for Non-Members \nReserve your tickets at https://bit.ly/33wfOp8 \n

SUMMARY:#GSOIClimateChallenge
DESCRIPTION:Join our social media challenge as we work towards being more climate conscious in our glass practices. \nShare how you are changing your habits\, materials\, processes\, packaging or working towards lowering your carbon footprint in your glass practice. \nPost a photo\, a video\, or go live in your Instagram stories to share with us! Invite 3 glassy friends to the challenge and tag #GSOIClimateChallenge. Let’s all learn and motivate each other to make small changes which help to make a difference in our field. \nThe event will launch from Feb 1st — but let’s keep it going for the entire Year of Glass 2022! \nAnd remember: the simplest change you can make in your glass studio can make a huge difference. \n

SUMMARY:GSOI Think Tank
DESCRIPTION:2022 is the International Year of Glass\, and there are going to be many glassy events centered around glass practices throughout the year. \nThe GSOI board has decided to adopt the theme of Climate Change as our national theme for IYOG2022. \nCome and join us for a brainstorming session – the GSOI Think Tank – as we begin to tackle and explore the theme of Climate Change in relation to glass. \nDuring this ‘Think Tank’ event we hope to open the conversation around glass making\, the climate and our individual and collective glass practices. We will use ideas and conversations generated in the ‘Think Tank’ to develop future events throughout 2022. \nSo join together with your fellow glass makers and let’s make the changes together.\nWe would love to see you there\, don’t worry if it is just to listen and learn more\, we won’t be putting anyone on the spot. \nThe zoom link was shared in the last newsletter\, so don’t forget to check your email spam folder if you missed it! Can’t find it? Send us a message and we’ll re-share it with you.

SUMMARY:Holiday open studio day/Christmas sale
DESCRIPTION:We will conduct ongoing narrated demonstrations of glassblowing\, allowing the public to watch this process and ask questions\, and offer a range of samples\, prototypes and studio seconds for sale at discounted prices. All ages are welcome and no prior registration is required. \nGlassblowing is a fascinating process involving constant activity as the molten glass is shaped by tools\, gravity and centrifugal force and visitors are able to see a simple functional object made from start to finish in about 15 minutes. Glassblowing is part of the industrial heritage of Ireland that has all but disappeared\, and the demonstrations offer a way to experience this rarely-seen activity in a safe\, relaxed setting. \nSocial distancing will be observed and all visitors are encouraged to wear a face covering and use the available sanitising products.

SUMMARY:Stained Glass With WildBird Studio
DESCRIPTION:Learn to create a beautiful glass panel using the Copper Foil technique of Stained Glass. \nYou will learn: \nTo use a pattern\, cut glass\, grind and foil\, solder\, and finally to finish off your piece with patinas and polish. We will then add loops and chain for your panel so it can be displayed proudly in your home.  \nAll materials are included in the cost of the course. There is no experience necessary as you will be taught every aspect of the making process. Lunch is not included. \nGlass is a beautiful but extremely challenging medium to work in\, and because of this so very satisfying when you make something out of it. It has flaws and imperfections and this is what makes it beautiful\, individual\, its what makes it yours.

SUMMARY:The Glass Road Consultation
DESCRIPTION:The Glass Road is a community project mapping all our members on the Island of Ireland. An extension from our very successful ‘Irish Gift Guide’ this map will help us promote you and all the fantastic glassmakers on the island. \nThe GSOI were successful in getting funding for this project from the Design and Crafts Council to present our map at the August Craft Month. \nWe want to start the project off with a consultation with our members. We want to know what you think\, love\, dislike\, feel about the project. Do you have any ideas that we might not have thought about? Let us know on June 3rd at 7.30pm. \nThe session will be recorded and a new dedicated ‘project page’ will be created on the website to house all our information and findings. \nThis project is only open to members. Attendance is not compulsory to be involved in the map but we would love to have as many voices as possible present at this consultation so that we can be as inclusive as possible with the final piece. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85218167933?pwd=eTkxN1J3VGEyS0llYm8yVm5HRDMyQT09
